The Dhaka zone's regional level competition of country's first ever "Budget Olympiad" took place at Sirajul Islam Lecture Hall, University of Dhaka, on December 2, 2017.
Almost 70 students from different universities and colleges in Dhaka took part in the competition, which has been jointly organised by Democratic Budget Movement; United Nations Youth Students Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB); ActionAid Bangladesh; and The Daily Star.
Prominent economist and President of the Budget Olympiad Committee, Professor Dr M M Akash, and UNYSAB’s President, Mohammad Mamun Mia, were present during the event.
Budget Olympiad was initiated with the aim of raising awareness among young people about budgetary issues and also, to promote their participation in development planning and budgetary discussions. 30,000 participants from 20 universities and colleges across Bangladesh have participated this year in the competition. The National Level Competition of Budget Olympiad is set to be held on December 13, 2017, at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban, University of Dhaka.
The champion and runners-up of National Level Competition will receive crests and certificates. They will also be awarded with BDT 15,000 and BDT 10,000 respectively as one-year fellowships, to carry out campaigns on budgetary issues.
